This review is for Dr. Gretchen Smith-Burke who was the on-call pediatrician at Unity Hospital during my son's delivery. I have never in my life experienced such negativity and distain from a medical professional as I did from Dr. Smith-Burke. My husband and I were trying to get discharged from a healthy delivery at approximately 1am on a Sunday morning. We had been in the hospital roughly 4 days, lived 15 minutes away, and my son and I were both in healthy condition. The on-call nurse said we should be ok to discharge that she was going to check with the on-call doctors first. Fine, I understand protocol. The nurse came back and said the OBGYN on-call was ok with it, however the pediatrician on-call (Dr. Smith-Burke) was not ok with it. The nurse encouraged me to ask Dr. Smith-Burke why I couldn't be discharged, so I said sure you can send her and I'll talk to her. I thought this was normal practice because again, this was the nurse's idea, not mine. About 45 minutes later, Dr. Smith-Burke walks aggressively through the door (first time meeting her) stating only her name. I asked, "Are you the pediatrician on-call?" and she sternly replied, "Yes." My husband and I stared blankly at each other because we thought she was going to start the conversation and explain why she didn't want us to leave. After a moment of awkward silence I asked her politely, "We were just wondering why we couldn't leave." This. This next response from a medical professional is something that still haunts me today. She then replied, "Would you normally take your kids out at 1 in the morning?" Mind you, her tone was condescending and she was scolding us like we were children. My husband replied, "What are you trying to say? Of course we wouldn't take our children out at this hour, however we live right down the road, and would just like to bring our baby home." She then snapped back that the normal time they last discharge patients is at midnight (literally one hour earlier than what we are asking). Now I'm getting heated, however as a new mother and a beautiful sleeping baby by my side I kept calm. I then asked her when is the soonest we can leave. She replied aggressively, "Well I guess if you must leave then I'll have the nurse start your paperwork." She then stormed out of the room. My husband and I were bewildered. We have never experienced such unprofessionalism from a medical "professional." The nurse came in like a cheerleader and said she was "happy for us." I asked if we had to see Dr. Smith-Burke again because I did not want to see her and explained our experience. She said that we wouldn't need to see her again and that she was scared to ask her too because of the "way she is." It clearly looked like this nice, young nurse felt threatened by Dr. Smith-Burke which is very sad. As we were leaving a separate nurse had to walk us to our car per protocol. I told her about our recent experience with Dr. Smith-Burke and she apologized and recommended we report her! She did not seem surprised at all by her actions. It is very clear this Doctor has a terrible reputation at the birth center and I feel sorry for anyone who has to interact with her on a regular basis. If you are considering going to her practice I strongly recommend you look elsewhere. If her bedside manner is anything close to what my husband and I experienced than I can't imagine how she is with her day-to-day patients.
